About PLAINVILLE MARTIAL ARTS

Rival Jiu-Jitsu was built on the idea that a great academy doesn’t need to be complicated. There are no cliques here, no confusing hierarchies, no drama. Just focused, structured training and a team atmosphere that welcomes everyone. Whether you’re just stepping onto the mat for the first time or returning to sharpen your competitive edge, you’ll find a place where you can belong, train seriously, and improve steadily.

Our approach prioritizes strong fundamentals, precise technical development, and a mindset of continuous learning. We emphasize clean, respectful training partners, safe progressions, and consistent instruction in both Gi and No-Gi. We’re here to help people of all backgrounds—whether they’re professionals looking to decompress after work or fitness enthusiasts searching for a more meaningful way to train—find their place in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

OUR TEAM AT PLAINVILLE MARTIAL ARTS

Professor Greg

Owner/Head PROFESSOR
greg wood

Head Instructor Greg Wood has been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 1997, making him one of Connecticut’s earliest practitioners of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

He began his journey under Royce Gracie, the legendary “Godfather of MMA”, and continued his training under Master Pedro Sauer, one of the most respected instructors in the world. Greg earned his black belt in 2016 and holds Pedro Sauer’s highest-level teaching certification.

Greg opened Plainville Martial Arts to share the benefits of jiu-jitsu with families, professionals, and individuals who want something deeper than a workout. His approach blends real-world self-defense, personal development, and positive community values, creating an academy where everyone, regardless of age or ability, can succeed.

“Jiu-Jitsu isn’t about being the strongest person in the room. It’s about being the most prepared, physically, mentally, and emotionally.”

— Professor Greg Wood
